HVO stands for hydrotreated vegetable oil. It is a paraffin based bio based liquid fuel, which is a suitable low-carbon alternative to ordinary diesel. Although "vegetable oil" is part of the name, the raw materials used to produce HVO are not limited to vegetable oil. Nowadays, HVO can be produced from used edible oil, residual animal fat, tall oil by-products and non food grade vegetable oil distillates. HVO is a 100% renewable diesel substitute with almost zero sulfur and aromatics. Using this energy supply method can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 90%.

In fact, as early as 2016, Volvo Penta internal combustion engine has used HVO fuel for energy supply. In Northern Europe, HVO mainly comes from forestry waste, which can be recycled. Nowadays, many customers of Volvo Group have been using HVO driven Volvo Quanda engines in their daily work.

Just in consideration of environmental protection and sustainable development, the Swedish Rock Music Festival has become the first large-scale event to use Volvo Quanda HVO to drive the engine. This year's Rock Music Festival has also become the most energy-saving and environment-friendly one in history.
