Volvo Penta Launches G17 Natural Gas Generator Engine to Empower Global Low-Carbon Backup Power Transition

20 January 2026 – Volvo Penta officially unveiled its brand-new G17 six-cylinder 17-liter natural gas generator engine, expanding the brand’s power generation product matrix alongside the well-proven D17 diesel engine platform, to meet the surging global demand for low-emission, flexible and reliable backup power solutions for data centers and critical infrastructure.

Driven by global energy transition and the explosive growth of hyperscale data centers, operators across the world are gradually shifting from traditional diesel backup power to cleaner gas power equipment that can adapt to renewable natural gas (RNG). The newly launched G17 gas engine shares the same mature base platform as Volvo Penta’s D17 diesel power unit, realizing highly unified structural design, maintenance standards and global spare parts compatibility, which greatly reduces customers’ later operation and maintenance costs and learning thresholds.

Adopting advanced spark ignition technology and optimized lean-burn combustion design, the G17 generator engine achieves ultra-low nitrogen oxide emission performance, fully complying with global mainstream environmental protection standards. It can operate stably with pipeline natural gas, biogas and renewable natural gas, bringing flexible multi-fuel selection space for power station operators. The product features fast startup and rapid load switching capacity, which can complete full power output access within a short time after grid failure, effectively guaranteeing the continuous power supply of core equipment such as server rooms.

Kristian Vekas, Industrial Power Generation Product Manager at Volvo Penta, commented on the new product launch: “The global energy transition cannot rely on a single technical route, and diversified fuel solutions need to develop in parallel. The launch of the G17 gas generator engine enables Volvo Penta to provide customers with both diesel and gas power options under one unified platform. Backed by the Volvo Group’s century-long technical accumulation and global after-sales service network covering more than 130 countries and regions, we can provide full-lifecycle technical support for global users to help them achieve energy conservation and carbon reduction goals.”

The G17 gas generator set can be matched with standard open racks, certified silent soundproof canopies and integrated ATS automatic switching systems. It is widely applicable to hyperscale data centers, commercial complexes, municipal engineering projects and marine auxiliary power scenarios, and has started global sample delivery to major regional distributors since February 2026.
